Safety Representative Course

Updated over a week ago

All companies covered by the Working Environment Act (“that employ workers”) must elect a safety representative. If the company has fewer than 5 employees, an alternative arrangement may be chosen. See the Working Environment Act §6-1 for conditions to deviate from this requirement.

In Norway, it is legally required that all safety representatives complete mandatory training. Runwell offers 2 types of safety representative courses. The courses provide training in the following topics:

  • The role of the safety representative

  • Psychosocial work environment

  • Physical work environment

  • Requirements in the Working Environment Act

  • Laws and regulations

  • Systematic HSE work

  • Sickness absence management

  • Ergonomics

  • Employees’ duty to participate

40-Hour Safety Representative Course

Our 40-hour course is designed to meet the requirements of the Working Environment Act §6-5 first paragraph, as well as the Regulation on Organization, Management, and Participation §3-18 and §3-19.

The course can be activated by going to procedures, then activating the procedure named 40h Safety Representative Course (40tVO). The course consists of online learning with interactive modules and workplace case assignments.

For Runwell to be able to offer this course free of charge, it also requires involvement from the safety representative’s manager. Tasks to be completed in Runwell during the course must be reviewed and discussed.

Simplified Safety Representative Course

This course is designed to provide safety representatives with the knowledge they need to contribute to a healthy work environment and to work systematically with HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment).

Our course can be chosen if both employer and employee agree that the scope of the training is sufficient according to the Regulation on Organization, Management, and Participation §3-19:

"The duration of the training shall be at least 40 hours. A shorter training period may be agreed upon if the parties jointly conclude that it is justifiable based on an assessment of the nature and extent of the problems."

Our course is shorter than 40 hours, and therefore it must be agreed in writing that both the safety representative and the employer find the course content satisfactory in accordance with the company’s risk profile and the working environment challenges that exist, cf. Regulation on Organization, Management, and Participation §3-19.

Such an agreement can be uploaded by clicking the Internal Control module, selecting procedures, choosing the relevant procedure (e.g., HSE procedure), clicking View full procedure, selecting Key document, and then clicking Add key document. From there, choose Safety representative training agreement, upload the agreement, and activate the document.
